You’ve probably heard of setting “SMART” goals (specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic, and timely), but we’re taking it a step further and suggesting you make your goals apply to the new “STAMPS” principle.
Think of a goal you are ready to tackle this summer, run it through the STAMPS checklist, and be ready to succeed!

SPECIFIC: Your goal is short and to the point. A vague goal leaves room for interpretation (AKA, excuses!) so keep your goal brief but precise.

TIMELY: Pick a date, any date, as long as it is realistic.
Write that date down including day, month, and year to keep you on track. You might also include mini-goals or milestone dates along the way and a reward for having reached your goal on time.

AFFIRMATIVE: It’s all good from here on out! Now is the time to focus your energy on the positive and leave the negative in your dust. Shift your attention to the outcome you’re after as opposed to the sacrifices you’re making along the path to your goal.

MEASURABLE: Once you’ve reached your goal it’s time to celebrate!
But you can only know you’re there if you can tangibly measure your success.

PRESENT TENSE: You’re now on the path to success! It’s time to start talking and acting like it by owning up to the journey you’ve embarked on. What was once just a dream is now a solid reality.

SHARE: Let everyone know what you’re doing! Share your goal with a specific accountability partner as well as family, friends, coworkers, and anyone else that’ll listen. Continue sharing with yourself as well with constant reminders in the form of phone alerts, social networking posts, and sticky notes anywhere and everywhere.
